INTERNATIONAL CASE COMPETITION SQUAD

We are one of the highest performing case competition squads in the world.

The International Case Competition (ICC) Squad is at the core of UCC.

We hold recruitment drives for Term 1 and 2 each year and select 10-20 students per term who demonstrate strong interest in case competitions and excellent critical thinking. Squad members go through an intense training curriculum and are given the opportunity to be selected as UNSW representatives at international case competitions. Our training structure targets three key development areas:

  1. Problem solving – to nurture the most innovative thinkers

  2. Presentation – to develop powerful rhetoric

  3. Teamwork – to create unity amongst diverse, unique individuals

Successful applicants understand that representing UNSW at ICCs is a two-way process and are actively looking for ways in which to contribute back to the society.

“At UCC, we’re all about sustainability. General Members apply for the International Case Competition Squad - those who show improvement, dedication and potential are selected to represent UNSW at ICCs. These ICC veterans then run workshops for our ICC Squad and General Members and continue to give back as alumni. With this model of continuous reinvestment, UCC is able to provide the same fantastic opportunities to many generations of students to come.”

- Benjamin Lee, 2015 UCC President

Squad members undertake a two-trimester education program led by UCC’s Education portfolio and its ICC Coaches. The program is comprised of a Junior and Senior Squad. The program’s objective is to enable the squad to learn and apply critical business skills to excel in ICCs and to help accelerate their careers.

Junior Squad. Squad members’ first term focuses on building fundamental business acumen and practising key consulting skills. This includes developing foundations in business analysis, storytelling, slide making, corporate strategy, implementation, and financial modelling. This ensures our squad develops capabilities in structuring case problems for a distinctive competitive advantage in case competitions. Squad members also begin to develop practical case cracking and advanced problem-solving skills to tackle more challenging, multifaceted business problems.

Senior Squad. Building off Junior foundations, the Senior curriculum accelerates members’ ICC readiness through use-case and best practice oriented training. Typically, members crystallise intrinsic strengths and preferred roles in a case team during this term. Additionally, squad members advance their consulting toolkit in specialised technical skills. Training is designed for students to dive deep into key business disciplines and themes, and to learn what drives organisational and industry excellence. Dedicated career preparation sessions are also integrated into the final term’s curriculum.

The programs we deliver for squad members can be categorised under three pillars:
Case Training, Growth & Development, and Squad Social Events.

If you are interested in these offerings, we highly recommend applying for the ICC Squad.

1. Case Training

  • Squad workshops: Squad workshops are the core of the two-trimester education program. They are a weekly, six hour Saturday commitment and are delivered by UCC’s Education portfolio and its ICC Coaches.

  • Case Day: At the end of each term, the Club participates in a ‘Case Day’, a one-day competition where squad members team up to solve and present a sponsored case study.

  • ICC training: Squad members selected to represent UNSW in an ICC undergo an intensive weekly case training schedule in the months leading up to the competition, under the guidance of coaches and academic support staff. Competitors are not selected purely on merit, but also on their holistic commitment to both the squad program and the Club. Read more about ICCs here.

2. Growth & Development

  • Regular brown bag sessions: short and informal training prepared by the squad, for the squad. Based on demand and capabilities – topics can range from structured communication to NFTs. Read more about brown bag sessions here.

  • Ad-hoc fireside chats: Personal and interactive discussions involving a moderator and guest (either an existing squad member or alumnus) on career-oriented topics. Subject matter may include careers in specific industries, recruitment tips and advice, etc. Read more about fireside chats here.

  • Buddy program: Junior squad members are connected with a Senior as a dedicated point of contact to streamline their membership experience.

  • Mentorship program: Squad members are connected with mentors from UCC’s alumni network and sponsor firms to help support career development.

3. Squad Social Events
